Report from South Glengarry
/The Township of South Glengarry has a strong tradition of combining the Great Canadian Kilt Skate with other elements that turn a kilt skate into a winter fair. As usual, the festivities included free skating at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre in Williamstown. Add to that: free hot chocolate and cupcakes.
The opening ceremonies included Mayor Lachlan McDonald and Member of Parliament Eric Duncan. A piper from the South Glengarry Pipes and Drums piped in the dignitaries, and the band was on hand to entertain the skaters as they circled the arena.
The opening ceremonies were followed by the MacCulloch Dancers.
Meanwhile, outside the arena, kilt skate revellers could enjoy a horse-drawn hay ride through the streets of Williamstown.
This year the kilt skate had to contend with competition from a different quarter far away in Italy. On that Sunday afternoon, Canada and USA faced off for the men’s Gold Medal hockey match-up on the final day of the Milano-Cortina Winter Games. The organizers responded by providing a television in lowhich proved very popular.
The game ended with a heart-breaking loss to the Americans in overtime, but the winter fair continued. It was one of ten kilt skates being held on the Great Kiltskate Weekend. The Cornwall Standard Freeholder reported on the success of the event.
